Returning Fencers Season Start-Up Information – 2017-2018 Season

  1. Forms and Physical:
    1. Fencing Club Information and Forms - Go to the Forms Page print the Three NG Fencing Forms in the first section, complete and bring to first practice.
    2. NGHS Athletics Forms - Go to the Forms Page and complete (online) the Seven NGHS Forms listed in the second section.
    3. Physical Examination - Go to the Forms Page and print out the NGHS Physical Examination Form, take it to your medical professional, get your physical, have them fill out and sign the form, take the form to Kathy Johnson, Room 600. Need to have physical completed before participating in practice.
  2. Practice Schedule:
    1. Coach John (Terris) will again coach our team this year.
    2. With the 2017-2018 season, we will now practice twice each week: Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
    3. Regular practice time will be from 3:30 to 5:00 PM each day. (Club Calendar)
    4. The team will practice in the NGHS Main Gym, Upper Level.
    5. During the first semester, we will be sharing the gym with the volleyball teams. Especially on the dates they are having home games, which are scheduled to begin at 5:00 PM on those days, we will need to be flexible on practice time and perhaps location. We’ll see.
    6. After volleyball season, basketball season begins. Their home games start at 3:00 PM (9th graders, then JV, then Varsity). Those days, we will not practice – only having one practice those weeks. At least that’s the plan at this point.
  3. Fencing Dues:
    1. Because the club membership has decided to practice twice each week, that doubles the number of practices throughout the season. You will remember the club surveyed the returning families, resulting in a near consensus to add the additional practices. Since we pay the coach $10 per fencer per practice (a great rate), this will substantially increase the dues total for the year.
    2. The club is still gathering cost information for the coming season. Once we have cost information from the league and rental contracts, we will finalize the dues for the season.
  4. New Fencers:
    1. You will have already received a text announcing a volunteering opportunity at the “This Is North” Extracurricular Fair, Tuesday, August 1st.
    2. The New Fencing Families Orientation Meeting is scheduled for Saturday, August 12th, 10:00 AM in the Media Center. There will be volunteering opportunities at that event. It has been suggested we should offer demonstrations of the fencing types and equipment.
    3. Again the club will be offering the new fencers a six-session, “Try-Before-You-Buy” opportunity. Since we will be practicing twice a week, those six session can be accomplished during the first three weeks of practice. Those “Beginners Fencing Practices” are scheduled from 2:30 to 3:30 PM.
